people what irrational act of violence might happen. >> capitol hill lawmakers failed to pass legislation to require universal background checks on all gun sales before the 4th of july holiday. they're expected to pick up the fight again when they return. a third police officer in the freddie gray death is requesting a bench trial. he chose the judge not a jury to decide his guilt or innocence on charges of manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment, and misconduct in the death of gray. freddie gray died last april after suffering a critical spinal cord injury while in police custody. new york investigators suspect a homemade bomb enthusiast made the explosive device that nearly killed a virginia college en

lower part of his leg was injured. police say the device was made by someone with a basic knowledge of chemistry, but they believe it wasn't put there to deliberately hurt anyone. iraqis carried coffins through the streets of baghdad as workers tried to dig more victims out of the rubble after sunday's deadly isis bombing. islamic state suicide bombers struck in a shopping district. it was one of the worst bombings during 13 years in iraq. iraqis afraid for their safety are growing angry with the government. well we're finally seeing some sunshine, but it is going to be very hot day, and this is just the start. and we finally got rid of all the rain from the early morning hours. now temperatures are heating up. reagan national airport in now with the observations today.

right now, italian police are questioning a homeless man accused of killing a university of wisconsin student, beau solomon. they made an arrest in the killing in rome. the 19-year-old's body was found in a river after he was robbed. solomon went missing last thursday. >> social butterfly, and he's just kind of beloved by everyone. he's the glue that keeps our family together. >> an italian news agency is reporting two witnesses came forward, saying they saw

mother nature kept us on the fence for most of monday, but last night, the annual concert on the mall and fireworks show went on

and that was for viewers at home who got quite a different show. >> reporter: if you're watching the fireworks from home last night, you probably had a great view, and you would have thought it was a nice, clear day yesterday. but that's the problem. it wasn't. the rain didn't stop capitol forest from setting off the fireworks and dazzling crowds. people like paul enjoyed the show inspite of the weather. those who didn't want to go to the dreary day settled in from the couch. here's the problem, it was too good. so it began, a fake force was trending. kelly picked up on it too. not only did pbs manage to clear the clouds out of the sky, but they cleared the scaffolding out too. they say the we showed a combination of the best fireworks from this year, and previous years. it was the patriotic thing to do. producers say because the weather was so overcast, they pulled together a combination

might want to pack the umbrella with you. we're going to see showers and storms. a very typical summer pattern. nothing special here, and with this trend, it's always possible for some of these storms to reach severe limits, but that's not the main threat. the main threat is showers here and there for each and every day. the longest stretch this season of temperatures into the 90s. our longest stretch is three days at 90. 91 a couple of days in june. we're going to be in the mid- 90s for a few days here. the pool is probably going to feel pretty nice for the kids at school this week, or all of summer. a break in the humidity, we're not going to get out of the 90s this weekend. but by saturday night into sunday, we'll see the humidity drop a little more to manageable, instead of just miserable. and our reporting is still up. temperatures are into the 80s. making their way into the

heat for today. some areas will cool off a little bit with showers and storms for the afternoon. this is what it feels like when you factor in the humidity. 90s for most areas, into the mid- to upper 80s for the shenandoah valley. if you're headed to the nats game, might want to pack a small umbrella for your purse or pocket. a hot one. a few showers slide to the south. it's cutting it close, but i think it will be a good game. 86 by 6:00, and into the 80s for the rest of the evening. live doppler, we're dry for now after those morning showers. as we head into the afternoon, we're going to see the cloud cover return. showers will be very spotty. let me go through 6:00, as we head to that 8:30, more storms could develop farther to the south. this is when you could see a few thunderstorms, maybe gusty winds. all in all, very hit or miss. notice, areas off to the north, not as much going on there, but your chances will
